Christmas with the Hayes – the Fuengirola edition! This Christmas, we head south to the Costa del Sol, to enjoy a frontline hotel with superior rooms, balconies and breathtaking sea views.

Our home for this festive adventure takes us to one of the region’s most authentic towns, Fuengirola, which remains packed with charm and a vibrant old town that will be twinkling with seasonal lighting. The hotel Ilunion is perfectly positioned on the pristine, palm-lined beachfront promenade, offering easy access to the flat streets of the town and the imposing Sohail castle for those who want to explore. Each superior room has been recently refurbished to a high standard, featuring modern walk-in showers, essential tea-making facilities, and private balconies with full frontal views of the Mediterranean. Dining is a social and authentic Spanish affair, with buffet meals including wine and water are taken at friendly, welcoming tables of four.

We have carefully planned our time to highlight the charm and festive magic of the Costa del Sol at a sophisticated, gentle pace. We head to the coastal town of Benalmádena, where you have the wonderful choice (entrances not included) of submerging yourself in the exotic, tropical atmosphere of the Butterfly Park, riding the Cable Car to enjoy breathtaking panoramic vistas, exploring the mesmerizing emerald wonders of the Sea Life Centre, or simply relaxing at one of the many inviting, sun-drenched cafes along the main promenade and the uniquely designed marina. We spend an afternoon discovering the sophisticated delights and designer bargains of the McArthurGlen Outlet Village and a morning visiting a Donkey Sanctuary, reveling in the peaceful tranquility of these docile and affectionate creatures while learning about their gentle nature and vital rescue work.

We take in the picturesque, whitewashed village of Mijas, where you can wander the quaint, cobblestone streets at your own leisurely pace. A highlight includes a magical visit to Málaga to witness the world-famous celestial Christmas lights, where the city transforms into a shimmering palace of gold and silver, allowing you to soak up the joyful, festive atmosphere. Another day is dedicated to “resort hopping,” where you will have the opportunity to relax in the elegant atmosphere of Marbella’s famed Plaza de los Naranjos, enjoy the beauty of the floral cobblestone lanes of Estepona, and explore the glamorous, opulent marina of Puerto Banús with its fast cars, super yachts, and premier designer boutiques. We top off the holiday with a delicious and plentiful Menu del Dia during the homebound journey, so you can relax and put your feet up in the evening.
