Part of our Spain by Province Tour series, join Jessica and David to discover the Provinces of San Sebastian and Vitoria. Immerse yourself in the splendour of Spain’s Basque Country, where culture, history and spectacular landscapes blend seamlessly into an unforgettable experience.
Our adventure begins and ends with ease and comfort, flying directly with Vueling between Alicante to Bilbao in just ninety minutes. We stay in a delightful seaside town in the 2* Hotel Alameda in Zarautz with breakfast and dinner.
Included are daily excursions to some of the most emblematic sights in the provinces of Vitoria-Gasteiz and Donostia-San Sebastián, in the beautiful Basque Country. Highlights include time to explore the charming and compact city of Vitoria, as well as a full day discovering the elegance and energy of San Sebastián, where we take in the breathtaking panorama from the viewpoint.
Our journey also takes us through a selection of delightful villages, each with its own character, story, and culinary tradition. We visit the fascinating border town famed for its vividly painted houses, the impressive basilica with the largest portico in the Basque Country, and a postcard-perfect seaside town celebrated for its open-air barbecue restaurants. To complete the experience, we travel through a magnificent Natural Park, pausing for a gentle, flat walk to an awe-inspiring viewpoint. We also explore an imposing and avant-garde 20th-century sanctuary — a striking contrast that somehow harmonises beautifully with the surrounding mountain landscape.
To truly appreciate the local culture and gastronomy, we enjoy a wonderful variety of immersive experiences. We begin with a visit to the ancient inland Salt Mine, which dates back to around 4,700 BC — one of the oldest active salt flats in the world. At the Iron Museum, we watch skilled craftsmen smelt and shape local iron ore using traditional medieval techniques, bringing history vividly to life.
Our journey continues with a visit to an artisan cheese producer and shepherd, where we discover the fascinating process behind this cherished and distinctive local delicacy. And of course, no experience in the Basque Country would be complete without learning about its famous cider! We spend time at a charming museum of rural life, where we see how 16th-century farmsteads devoted their entire upper floors to the cider press, a delightful glimpse into the region’s enduring traditions.
