Gran Alacant is officially part of Santa Pola, but has grown so much it even has its own town hall. It is essentially a large urbanisation which sits high on the cliffs overlooking the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean and the Island of Tabarca.
Gran Alacant has several commercial areas all of which offer shops, bars and restaurants. The largest commercial area is just off the N332, whilst the one with the town hall is located in the middle of the houses. There is a street market every Thursday morning, which swells in size during the busy summer months. A lawn green bowling club known as Monte Mar Bowls, tennis courts at the municipal sports centre and a tourist train that runs all year and links the commercial centres, cliff top walkways and the beach.
The fine sandy beaches of Gran Alacant stretch north to Arenales del Sol and south to the little hermitage which marks the start of the scenic drive to Santa Pola. From here there is a walking and cycling route below the cliffs, lots of tiny beaches and seaweed covered coves that are ideal for rock pooling and snorkelling and during the summer months a number of chill out beach bars.
The Clot de Galvany has been a Municipal Natural Park since 2005. This protected coastal area of sand dunes has a couple of marked walking routes, old bunkers, a recreation picnic area and bird watching observation huts and towers. At the top of the cliffs is the lighthouse, known as the Faro de Cabo de Santa Pola. An excellent view point it offers stunning vistas and is surrounded by untamed countryside with two signposted, but many unmarked but well worn walking and cycling trails. In 2015 a metal platform called the Sky Walk was constructed, it protrudes slightly over the cliffs and gives the feel of walking in the air. There are two entrance and parking points, one at the top of the Gran Alacant urban area and the other just off the N332.
