Elche CF, No Win in 13

EuroTourGuide Elche CF Match Report v Valencia 30th January 2021
Elche's unlucky streak of 13 matches without a win has seen them slowly but surely slipping down the table, finally landing them in the relegation zone. This sad statistic made Saturday's derby match against Valencia an immensely important one. Added to this is the disappointing results of the January Transfer Window which saw the arrival of a defending midfielder, rather than a couple of much needed creative forwards.
In the infamously steep Mestalla Stadium both teams had a hesitant start as memories of too many recent losses weighed heavy on all of the players. The egg shell like performances were broken in the 22nd minute when Portuguese winger Guedes travelled the pitch then cut and crossed to the head of Danish Wes who powered in an impossible to save bouncing header. Just 10 minutes later, following a foul by Barragan, the opposition had a chance for a second from the penalty spot. Badia, the Elche season saviour, anticipated the strike and executed another stunning save. This reinvigorated the Franjiverdes with goal opportunities coming from Tete Morente and Mojica.
The second half was as dire as the first half for the Elche CF players and agony for the fans. The referee did not help the situation either. He gave a total of 7 yellow cards. This means that not only Gonzalo Verdú but also Alberto Barragán and Tete Morante will all have to miss the next fixture, as they have all accumulated 5 yellow cards each since the September start.
For the first time this season Valencia did not concede a goal on home soil, whilst Elche continue to increase their games on the bounce without a win record, which now stands at a very worrying 14. The fans are now starting to voice their disappointment at the performances and the manager. It is anyone's guess as to what this week will hold for the club.
Elche CF will play at home on Saturday 6th February at 18:30 against 5th in the table Villarreal.
