Elche CF, A Busy Week

EuroTourGuide Elche CF Match Report v Valladolid and Barcelona 2021
On Tuesday evening Elche CF travelled for the second time in 4 days to the Spanish interior, this time for a La Liga fixture against Real Valladolid. After 12 games without winning, Elche had slipped down into the relegation zone and this was a vital opportunity for them to climb out. Unfortunately they did not take advantage and ended with a draw.
Their opponents hold the record for the fastest goal in La Liga history: 7.42 seconds, scored by Joseba Llorente on 20 January 2008 against Espanyol. But it was to be Elche's turn to score first. Within the opening minutes Josan executed an exquisite left footed punch past the goalie. Valladolid responded quickly with a shot of their own, but failed to find the net. On 43 minutes Josan scored his second after receiving a perfect cross from Verdu. Half time saw Almiron change his tactics to defensive play with defensive substitutes, and Valladolid's damaged spirits recover. Their first goal was disallowed as VAR confirmed a handball. The second goal stood and came from freshly substituted Michel. The third goal was a gift by the ref from an innocent foul, which Joaquin converted.
The legendary Barcelona visited the Martinez Valero on Sunday 24th at 16:15, for Elche's second La Liga match of the week. The stats make poor reading for Elche. Since 1978 the two sides have played each other 10 times with an aggregate score of 31-0!
The first half offered very few chances, but Barcelonas' De Jong scored on the 39th minute. He poked home an attempted clearance by Diego Gonzalez which wrong footed Edgar Badia. A lot of work for Elche still to do, but Barcelona can not be described as dominating. At the start of the second half Elches' Rigoni had a one on one with the goalie which was skilfully blocked by Stegen extended foot. The second half provided few highlights as Elche managed to keep the might Barcelona at bay until the 89th minute when 21 year old Barcelona born Ricard Puig headed in his second goal for the club. A zero pointer for Elche.
Elche CF will play a local Derby Match next against Valencia CF on Saturday the 30th January 2021 at 18:30.
