Another great result for Elche CF
La Liga games resumed this weekend after the 2 week International break. This rest time was well spent by the Elche CF team at La Finca Golf Resort and Spa in Algorfa, consolidating their stragatgy and absorbing their final players into this seasons squad. These included the left footed centre back Diego Gonzalez from Malaga, Emiliano Rigoni from Zenit de San Petersburgo and Iván José Marcone on loan from Boca Juniors.
Behind the scenes it was a difficult time for the office staff as several of them tested positive for Covid 19. We wish them all a speedy recovery.
On Saturday evening the team travelled the 750km to Alaves by plane. Despite scoring only 1 goal in 3 games they started in 15th place out of the 20 La Liga teams, and this is after playing 2 less matches than most of the other teams. They kicked off their 4th match since their return to La Liga in their new away kit; red and blue to reflect the colours of the Elche Flag with, what I like to call, warning chevrons (the Hummel logo) down both arms and one leg!
Elche CF came out strong and created some great chances during the first half. They had their first goal after just 20 minutes, but sadly Fidel was ruled off side by VAR. On 22 minutes Edgar Badia executed another one of his magnificent saves to deny Alaves the lead. Just seconds later Alaves fluffed a golden opportunity. Rodrigo Ely, on loan from AC Milan, headed the ball wide infront of an open goal. On 38 minutes, a shot from Elche's Pere Milla, the man who scored the promotion winning goal back in August, hit the back of the net. It was, after a short pause, ruled as onside by VAR. They went into their half time team talk 0-1 up.
Alaves started the second half by missing another golden opportunity. The chance was squandered from close range and sailed high over the bar. 15 minutes later there was another golden opportunity for the home team from a well executed give and go move, only for the chance to be squandered, once again. On 75 minutes Elche's Pere Milla had a golden opportunity which rattled the post but fell just wide. This was quickly followed by another fluffed golden opportunity for Alaves as Joselu received the ball only yards in front of the goal but sent it centimetres over the bar. On 86 minutes #11 Tete Morente secured Elche's lead as he slid the ball across the goal face to the back of the net! Just 3 minutes of injury time, the ref's whistle went and Elche CF have another 3 points.
Elche CF finish the week in 12th position. Next match is against 13th placed Valencia at 21:00 on Friday 23rd October. This will be broadcast on the Spanish Terstitial Gol Channel.
