Elche CF, Relegation Realisation
On Friday evening Elche CF faced a 6 pointer fight against Huesca. Elche occupied the place just above the relegation zone, whilst Huesca was at the top of the zone. The match was further complicated as Huesca had employed the ex Elche manager, Pacheta, who coached Elche CF to their miraculous elevation to La Liga during the 2019/20 season.
As the saying goes, when the referee blows his whistle there are no friends. This was certainly true of Pacheta, he gave Elche no special favours, although one of his players did score an own goal.
The play was frenetic. Huesca scored after just 3 minutes. Rafa Mir number 11, on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers deftly headed the ball into the Elche goal to become Huesca's top La Liga scorer. In the very next minute, on the very next run of play, the scoreline returned to an equilibrium. Barragán crossed the ball in front of goal and Vavro, the 25 year old Slovak, tapped it into his own goal. Then followed a string of events which ended with a penalty decision in favour of Huesca. This was questioned as further up the string Huesca had committed a foul. VAR was rewound and consulted and the penalty was annulled. In a rare micro error of judgement, Badia let in the second goal on the 30th minute. The ball bounced a few meters before his line and Badia's hands raised just nano seconds too slowly as the ball brushed the top finger seams of his gloves.
The second half was more pedestrian, neither side worrying the other. The final goal came from the second penalty of the match, again generated by Mojica, the 28 year old Columbian defender. Rafa Mir stepped up to take and convert it, scoring his 12th goal in the La Liga and his second of the match.
The 3-1 score sent Elche CF down into the relegation zone, a position that neither the manager, players or fans want to occupy for long! With 26 points, Elche is facing a rough relegation rumble, as only 3 points separate them from bottom placed Eibar.
On Sunday the 18th at 14:00 18th placed Elche CF will play 14th placed Osasuna.
