Elche CF, Easter Sunday Surprise
On Easter Sunday, 17th placed Franjiverdes took on 7th placed Real Betis at the Martinez Valero. Umbrellas were needed by the media representatives pre kick off to alleviate the effects of the April Showers.
All the teams below Elche CF had already played, so the match was a great opportunity for the team to gain points on their relegation rivals. On the other hand, a win for Betis would see them rise into a Europa League position. So much to play for, for both teams.
The first upset came after 14 minutes. Verdu generated an unnecessary penalty by a late tackle, which Borja Iglesias converted into an impossible to save shot. The shock of being a goal down seemed to galvanise the Franjiverdes, although not quite enough for Dani Calvo to make use of a free kick close to goal. 14 minutes after scoring, Iglesia was substituted off due to injury. On the 36 minute the assist of the season was made by Tete Morente, who shimmy shimmied past 2 defenders before whipping the ball across the Betis goal mouth to the waiting foot of Pere Milla, who simply redirected it over the goal line. Half time score one all.
For some reason after 7 minutes of the second half, the Referrer gave a free kick just outside of the box. Elche CF employed a new tactic of have a player lying on the ground behind the wall, but it wasn't needed as the ball went high. A few minutes later another heart testing moment was experienced as the ball ping-ponged between the players in front of the Elche goal. The remained of the fixture passed with Elche displaying a high level of discipline and defending, whilst staying alert until the final whistle.
A much needed point gained and an important boost to moral against Manuel Pellegrinis' Real Betis.
On Friday night at 21:00, Elche CF take on Huesca. This will be an interesting fixture as Huesca is now managed by Pacheta, the manager who coached Elche CF to their miraculous elevation to La Liga during the 2019/20 season as well as their promotion to Segunda during the previous season. He is an Elche legend who joined Huesca when they were bottom of La Liga, and has so far raised them to top of the relegation zone.
