Elche CF, 9 Point Present?
Elche CF played 3 matches during the festive period, from a possible 9 points they secured just 2.
On December 22nd they took on relegation placed Osasuna, a must win game as Elche had been gradually slipping down the table. The recent Positive Covid Test by the coach Jorge Almiron, meant that he had to direct his men virtually from isolation. Osasuna opened the scoring on 10 mins. They broke down the right, crossed past two Elche defenders and Edgar in goal and finished off with a light touch by Garcia at the back post. They fluffed their next opportunity, sending a golden rebound high over the bar. Elche started the 2nd half with a copy cat goal down the same side of the pitch. They crossed into the box, followed by a flick from Rigoni which found Fidel at the far post 1-1. Just minutes later, Osasuna replied with another similar effort, the cross found Brasanac who stroked the ball past Edgar for 1-2. Elche were then gifted a golden opportunity courtesy of an Osasuna defensive mistake. Thankfully Carillo converted with a well taken strike inside the box to save a point for the Frankiverdes. Final Score 2-2.
Playing at home again, Elche faced the Mighty Real Madrid on December 30th. A team costing 436 million against one costing 34 million, a mind boggling, eye watering fact! Real Madrid pressed early and intensely. With Edgar already beaten, Marcelo saw his shot smash the bar. Next, Asensio fired a bullet toward Edgar who incredibly tipped it onto the bar, only to see Modric head home the rebound from close range. Elche hung on and it was 0-1 at half time. On 52 mins Elche were awarded a penalty which Fidel fired past Courtois to even up the score. Buoyed up Elche's Lucas Boye narrowly missed as his shot shaved the wrong side of Real's post. Then Real started pressing once again and Edgar once again saved his team in the final minutes, denying both Kroos and Ramos certain winners. However the last kick of the game fell to Elche and Verdu, only for his free kick to be superbly tipped away by Cortois. Final Score Elche 1-1, a brilliant result.
Finally Elche travelled to the San Mames to take on Athletic Bilbao. The first half was all about Athletic playing good football and Elche playing bad football as they gave the ball away time and time again. The deciding goal of the game come on the 25th minute by the captain Iker Muniain, nicked named Bart Simpson he has only ever played at Bilbao. He made his debut in 2009 and has so far notched up over 430 appearances. Elche played a little better during the second half and Athletic missed many opportunities resulting in a 1-0 scoreline.
Elche CF will play Getafe on Sunday the 10th 18:30.
