Elche CF Loose to the Boys in Green and White

EuroTourGuide Match Report Real Betis v Elche CF 1st November 2020
Elche CF played their 6th game of the 2020/21 season this weekend starting in 7th position, whilst their opponents, Real Betis played their 8th game starting in 11th position with 9 points.

Elche are a couple of games behind because of their exceedingly long promotional battle which would have meant a summer break of just 2 weeks. The most recent head to head results are in Elche's favour, with them winning 3 and drawing 1 of the last 4 games.

Having flown to Seville on Saturday night, Elche CF started nervously in their away kit of red and blue. Betis, playing in white and green, tactics were clear, use the flanks. After just 7 minutes this provided the first goal of the game as the 24 year old Paraguay Sanabria slotted in a shot. It seems that Manuel Pellegrini, the Betis manager, had discovered a weakness in Elche CF's defence, which his team continued to exploit. The stats reflect the game, at the quarter hour mark, Betis had 7 shots on goal to Elche's 0, with the home side having 65% possession. Just before the half hour Betis's Cristian Tello received the ball in an almost off side position and with a late change of shooting foot, fooled Edgar, putting the ball between the goalies legs. Elche CF made their first attack moves of the game on 40 minutes, but to no avail. As half time approached Elche's Marcone gave away a penalty. Fekir's attempt was saved by the sure hands of Edgar as the ball was partly passing the line, but the ref still had to call upon VAR to clarify the save.

Elche CF started the second half much more positively and with more possession. But it didn't last long as Tello scored his second goal of the match at 56 minutes. Just 4 minutes later, Elche responded with a cracking goal from Josan. He received the ball on the run and guided it into the bottom left corner. Almiron made a triple substitution on 73 minutes, which made little difference, and so Elche experienced their second loss after returning to La Liga.

Elche CF's next challenge will be home against Galician based Celta Vigo on Friday the 6th November at 21:00.
