Minimum passenger requirement met — the tour will go ahead
We’re excited to reveal the third stop in our Discovering Spain Province by Province series — the vibrant Basque Country and the stunning province of Bilbao! Join Jessica and David for a memorable adventure full of culture, history, architecture, and spectacular scenery.
We begin with an early departure, by coach to Alicante Airport for our flight to Bilbao, scheduled to leave at 06:35. Just 90 minutes later, we’ll touch down in the vibrant capital of the province of Bilbao, in the heart of the Basque Country – known as Bizkaia in Basque and Vizcaya in Spanish. Upon arrival, a local coach will be waiting to transfer us and our luggage directly to the Hotel Silken Indautxu, ideally located in the city centre. The rest of the day is yours to uncover Bilbao’s many charms: marvel at the world-famous Guggenheim Museum, wander the atmospheric Old Town (Casco Viejo), and visit the striking Santiago Cathedral. Check in at the hotel in the early afternoon for some well-deserved rest and relaxation before heading out to sample the region’s renowned cuisine in one of the many tempting Basque restaurants nearby.
The next day we venture into the lush, rolling countryside surrounding Bilbao to uncover some of the province’s best-kept secrets. Our first stop is the captivating Fabric Museum, where we explore an impressive array of traditional and modern textile machinery. Here, we delve into the fascinating process behind the creation of the iconic Basque Berets, gaining a true appreciation for this cultural symbol and the craftsmanship that goes into making it. Afterwards, we sit down to enjoy a delicious Menú del Día (included), sampling local flavours in a local restaurant. In the afternoon, we continue to the magnificent Torre Loizaga, home to one of Europe’s most exclusive private collections of Rolls-Royce auto-mobiles. With 45 impeccably maintained vehicles on display – including every model produced between 1910 and 1990. We return to the hotel around 17:00, leaving you with the entire evening free to continue exploring the vibrant city of Bilbao at your own pace.
Our third day begins with a journey to the dramatic, rocky coastline of the Basque Country. We visit a charming fishing village, where colourful harbour front houses, bobbing boats, and the scent of fresh seafood capture the essence of maritime life. After some free time to explore its winding lanes and coastal views, we board a boat for an unforgettable cruise along the striking shoreline, culminating in a breathtaking view of the iconic Isla de San Juan de Gaztelugatxe – made world-famous as Dragonstone in Game of Thrones, the ancestral seat of House Targaryen and Daenerys’s stronghold in Season 7. Back at the port, there’s time to enjoy a relaxed lunch at a local restaurant of your choice before we return to Bilbao for a unique experience on the world’s first transporter bridge. We ascend by lift and take a thrilling walk across the 50-metre-high platform, enjoying sweeping panoramic views of the Nervión estuary. For the return journey, we step onto the suspended gondola for a smooth 90-second glide across the river. The coach then takes us back to the hotel, where the rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your leisure.
Your final full day is free to savour the very best of Bilbao at your own pace. Take a boat trip along the Nervión river, or hop on the sleek coastal metro and discover the charm of the city’s outlying fishing villages – now elegant suburbs adorned with grand Victorian-era summer houses once built for Bilbao’s wealthy elite. At the final stop, you’ll find the delightful seaside village of Plentzia, where a boat-dotted river winds past a characterful harbour and pristine white-sand beaches invite a relaxing stroll. For sweeping panoramic views, take the funicular up to the summit of Artxanda Mountain, where the city of Bilbao stretches out beneath you, nestled in the lush green hills. Football fans might enjoy the immersive tour of San Mamés Stadium, home to Athletic Club, while walkers can follow the scenic river estuary, soaking up the city’s industrial heritage and vibrant street life. Food lovers shouldn’t miss the chance to sample pintxos – the Basque Country’s famous small bites – in cosy bars tucked away in hidden corners. And for a true taste of Bilbao’s soul, wander the Siete Calles (Seven Streets), the cobbled, bustling heart of the Old Town, where centuries of history, culture, and commerce come alive in a maze of lively plazas, artisan shops, and atmospheric alleyways.
On departure day the buffet breakfast begins at 07:00 so we have time to indulge before setting off in the coach at approximately 08:00 to catch our 09:30 flight from Bilbao Airport, conveniently located just 15 km away. Touching down in Alicante at 10:50, our coach will be waiting to welcome us back and take us home to the Vega Baja. Arriving in time for Friday lunch, filled with happy memories of a truly remarkable journey through one of Spain’s hidden gem provinces.
